Craig brought us this blast from the past 1969
Pro-Street Camaro for a little drivetrain update. The
vehicle came in with a Muncie 4 speed manual with a
Hurst V-Gate shifter. The 350 small block with the 6-71
blower made just under 600 hp, and is a blast to drive.
The vehicle was a HOT ROD magazine feature car in 1981,
and has been stored in its current build style for over
12 years. The recent owner decided that the 4 speed and
4.11 gearing was too much for a street cruiser our crew
here at ATS had a T56 swapped into the car in no time.
The 4 speed tunnel was highly modified to fit the
external linkage of the V-Gate, so a new tunnel had to
be fabricated to replace it. We ended up installing a
McLeod street-twin dual disc clutch to hold to the blown
small block’s power, and a T56 from Rockland Standard
was upgraded with Viper internal’s to handle the power
of the 350, ensuring drag launches would not break the
trans. A complete auto-T56 swap kit was purchased ahead
of time to ease in the installation process, and the
entire install went quicker that we could snap pictures.
We have the completed T56 in the car, but not much in
between. The vehicle was completed and washed for
delivery.
